Position:              Dispatcher


Description:  DispatcherPVS Transportation manages scheduling drivers, influencing a strong safety culture, developing and managing reports in Excel, and providing fluent communication between the drivers and management team.   This position reports to the Operations Manager.


  • Monitor Daily Progress of drivers in all markets
  • Monitor Daily workflow/PeopleNet in TMW
  • Print next day BOL’s, review for special instructions and place in corresponding mailboxes
  • Ensure proper C of A is attached to BOL
  • Review BOL for special instructions
  • Enter Late Reason Codes/SR’s in TMW, if applicable
  • Print dispatch sheet and place on driver table
  • Print out equipment utilization sheet for drivers
  • Communicate service interruptions with CS groups
  • As changes occur update TMW/Dispatch sheets with needed information
  • Cancel unused BOL’s and PO Paperwork in TMW, and communicate with CS about cancelled loads
  • Create Notes in TMW for billing if problems occur
  • Work with Terminal Management and Customer Service on BOL discrepancies
  • Contact steel mills about inventory levels
  • Manage weekly volume report to US Steel: Great Lakes
  • Manage same day loads called in
  • Must be Cross Trained in all markets
  • Work with Fleet Managers to schedule OOS equipment to be tested
  • Create Empty Movements in TMW
  • Manage new customer ship to process
  • Assist in the documentation of procedures and policies
  • Run weekly on-time report
  • Works with Management team on annual driver reviews

Supervisory Responsibilities

Models and teaches the Nicholson Nine values in all supervisory activities.  Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the department's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include: Interviewing, hiring and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints, and resolving problems.

EDUCATION and/or experience:

  • Solid understanding of the D.O.T. rules and regulations, the driver log book, and possess the ability to understand and audit driver logs.
  • Fluent in Microsoft Excel, Word and PowerPoint.
  • Have the ability or experience required to operate in a mainframe and pc environment.
  • Flexible work schedule
  • Able to be on call by phone 24/7
  • Must have experience in scheduling and dispatching trucks and drivers.
  • 1-3 years’ experience in the transportation or logistics field.
  • Transportation Management System experience is a plus.



Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.  Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.  Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers, suppliers, during audits and/or employee organizations.



Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals.



Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.  Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
